2006 WHC Film Festival Announcement

I just got an email back from Mike Mendez telling me that we can show his new movie THE GRAVEDANCERS in the World Horror Convention film festival. We also are showing an adaptation of Matthew Costello's novel BENEATH STILL WATERS thanks to Lion's Gate.

We are working on both the new progress report and the panel schedule right now. As head honcho, I've pencilled in Matthew's movie to premiere on Thursday night and Mike's to premiere on Saturday night before the gross out contest. The main hall of the convention seats 650 people, so if we have more people than last year at New York we might be in trouble!

I hope that you all love the films we show you. We're wavering on showing you the movie with Gary Busey voicing a homicidal gingerbread man, but then again you might like that at 3 in the morning. We are trying to arrange to show the movies on the hotel's closed circuit TV system as well -- cross your fingers for that!

WORLD HORROR CONVENTION 2006 COMES TO SAN FRANCISCO: World Horror Convention 2006, a professional convention for writers, artists, publishers and booksellers focusing on horror and dark fantasy, comes to the Holiday Inn San Francisco-Golden Gateway May 11-14, 2006. Guests of Honor include author Peter Straub (Toastmaster; www.peterstraub.net), artist Brom (www.bromart.com), publishers John Pelan (www.darksidepress.com) and Hiroki Sakai (www.vertical-inc.com), and authors Kim Newman (www.johnnyalucard.com) and Clive Barker (www.clivebarker.com). Special events include presentation of the 2006 Horror Grandmaster Award, a charity auction to benefit Bat Conservation International, Inc. (www.batcon.org), a Mass Autographing session, an Art Show, a Dealers Room, an independent film festival, publisher and film pitch sessions, panels, readings, fiction contests, and more.

San Francisco has a colorful past, growing from a small village to a major city nearly overnight as a result of the 1849 Gold Rush. The writers of the "beat" generation, the hippies of the Summer of Love in the late 1960's and the large gay/lesbian population have all contributed to making San Francisco the fascinating place it is today. The City by the Bay was home to literary legends such as Ambrose Bierce and Fritz Leiber, and the Bay Area hosts horror personalities in both the literary world and the world of cinema. For more than ten years, the World Horror Society has overseen the World Horror Convention to provide an event that is conducive to education, networking and conducting business for horror professionals and enthusiasts. In celebration of professional achievement, WHC presents the Horror Grandmaster Award, honoring individuals who have contributed greatly to the horror field. Honorees are nominated and selected by past and present Members of WHC, and the 2006 Horror Grandmaster Award will be presented in a special ceremony at WHC 2006. This year’s co-chairs are Darren Mckeeman of Gothic.net, one of the foremost sites for online horror fiction and news; Chad Savage of SinisterVisions.com, award-winning horror artist and web designer; and Jeremy Lassen of Night Shade Books (www.nightshadebooks.com), award-winning publisher of quality books from a broad spectrum of genres. WHC 2005 Art Show News

As of today, I'll be stepping in to head up the WHC2005 Art Show. We are in the process of gathering and collating paperwork, contact info, and the other 500 elements I need to get familiar with in the next 48 hours, and then a massive mailing will go out to all juried artists.

The Mystery of 2005

As of the end of the last WHC, no firm bids had been placed or accepted for next years World Horror. (At least as far as I've managed to learn so far.) There is talk of Vancouver, Toronto, or maybe Phoenix again, and every year someone (usually John Pelan) tries to convince me that it should be in San Francisco, though I don't know anyone around here with enough time to commit to it.

Anyway, with plans seemingly up in the air for next year, and this new tribe having been started for WHC, I thought maybe this would be a good introductory thread where we can discuss what we've heard about the plans for 2005, or lack there of, and sort of keep each other informed.

Anyone more in the know than I am? As that I left WHC 2004 early Sunday morning, I may have missed something, and the plans might not be as bleak sounding as I've heard. (I'll have to blame my network of spies for that one!)
